I've never had them be fussy, they seemed to be fond of taking over entire gardens within a season if there's no border to stop them.

when we buy strawberry starts we plant the roots direct in soil sideways in a trench row to prevent too deep planting

Why did you use pressure treated lumber? Chemicals will leach into the soil and into your plants root system.
