@the_green_bird_brigade: What my birds eat in a day 🗓️ People are often surprised when I tell them how I feed my birds, mostly because I challenge some of the most common misconceptions, especially these two: Misconception 1 - parrots need food available at all times. Misconception 2 - parrots need fruit, nuts, and seeds in their daily diet. I used to believe these things too and was guilty of both overfeeding my birds AND feeding them the wrong foods. The main reason these misconceptions exist is because we are comparing our captive pet parrot’s needs to the needs of their wild counterparts. A diet high in fat and/or sugar and over feeding/free feeding can increase hormones and hormonal behavior leading to common behavioral issues, many of which are the reason birds are so frequently rehomed. Diet also has the biggest overall impact on our bird’s health. In fact, an all commercial seed diet can cut a bird’s life as much as in half. #birdtricks #birds #parrots #birdfood #animalhusbandry
