@spreadsheetnation: Replying to @seandent83 Excel will warn you when it thinks you have text that looks like it might be a number. This can be a helpful warning since numbers stored as text don’t work very well with formulas and sorting. However, you may want to turn those warnings off. You can turn off the warning on individual cells by selecting the cell and clicking the box next to it. Then choose Ignore Error. This works when you select multiple cells too. If you always work with ZIP codes or other numbers where number formatting doesn’t matter, you can always turn those warnings off. To do so, click File and then Options. Go to the Formulas section and then the section called Error checking rules. Uncheck the box for numbers stored as text and then you’ll never see that warning again. You should be careful about turning off all warnings, as numbers stored as text can be a problem and being warned about it might be useful. #excel #googlesheets #workhacks

Or create custom number format for the number of digits you want displayed. ##### will keep the leading 0 and keep it as a number if you need it to be so in a formula.

Excel will strip off leading zeros when I import data from a database. Is there a way to stop this?

Excel is kind of broken in this way. You really would want to stop treating the cells as a number, but this is not a portable fix.

Select cells you want formatted in this way. Right click and select "Format Cells..." Select the "Number" Tag, and scroll down to "Custom" in the category list. Type "0000000000" into the Type field.
