A View from the Ground is a book I personally think asks us to be intentional. Reading this book, and reflecting on it, made me feel that I was in the place to receive it in the spirit the author intended. “Clyde, Eyes Open” is what Atom Araullo wrote when he signed my copy. These two words, written as a dedication, are the very core of his book. Let’s open our eyes beyond our own view from the ground, and make space for the realities of those who stand on different ground. Let these stories take up space, even when it is uncomfortable to know about them. Because we are only uncomfortable reading about it.
These people lived the uncomfortable. And perhaps, this is where kindness begins: when we allow ourselves to see beyond what is familiar, to understand what we may never have to experience ourselves, and to ask what we can do to help. Kindness is not always grand. Sometimes, it begins with making space for someone else’s reality, listening without looking away, and choosing to care even when we cannot fully understand. Maybe that is what intentional reading means: allowing a book to unsettle us, to make us look beyond what is familiar, and to sit with stories we might otherwise choose not to see.
