![The Demiurge creates the material world as the unwitting instrument of Sophia. According to the Tripartite Tractate, “The logos (Sophia) uses him as a hand, to beautify and work on the things below” (100:31–33). Likewise, Excerpts of Theodotus describes him as “the god through whom she (Sophia) made the heaven and the earth” (47:2; cf. 49:1–2). The Gospel of Philip compares the Demiurge and his angels to beasts of burden that are “submissive and obedient,” explaining that “The Holy Spirit (Sophia) shepherds every one and rules [all] the powers,” both the “domesticated” (the Demiurge and his angels) and the “wild” archons (60:24–31). Although the Demiurge believes he acts by his own will, he remains ignorant of Sophia’s influence. As Marcus writes, “The creation itself was formed by the mother through the Demiurge without his knowledge, after the image of invisible things” (Against Heresies 1:17:1).
