I lived n a very old house that only had one original closet that was at most 16 inches deep. It had shelves off to the side though.

closets were also for wealthy in beginning, because it was a taxable space. check out odd taxes, lots for architecture, others I'd be curious to know about!

My biggest flex is I have an old home with plaster and wood trim but ALSO closets and built ins. AND my master BR closet has a skylight!!!
