@thabani.mtsi: I had a "poor start" to a public speaking training I recently hosted for postgraduate at Stellies 😅 I greeted and asked how they were aaaand... nothing, just crickets 🙈 Of course, I recovered, but I looked back and asked myself what I should've done. Here is what I came up with. I should've said, "Hey, everyone, let me do a quick mood check... Give me yay, meeeh, or nay. " This approach would have been beneficial because: 1. I like my training, especially communication training, to be interactive. So it would have helped me set that expectation of engagement quiet early on. 2. It would have given them options to use in response to my question. When you pose a question to an audience, you also need to give guidance on what answers you expect. 3. It would have given me an observable energy baseline on where people in the room were at. This then informs how I deploy my energy throughout the session. Just a change in the wording I used could've helped me set expectations, give guidance, and get engagement. Share with someone who would find this useful.
