Fully fired ceramics are waterproof because the clay is vitrified. If it’s still leaking water then it hasn’t been fired right.

Terracotta is specifically a type of clay that remains porous when fully fired, which is why it's used for planters. Not all clays remain porous when fully vitrified.

For most of human history we used unglazed clay. It works great, you just have to burnish it to make it waterproof.

that's not exactly true. if clay is food safe and fired enough it will become fully ventrefied and water proof!

I love bare clay pottery! The texture and color can be so beautiful depending on the clay body. And you can definitely eat or drink out of it if it is vitrified at a mid to high temp!
