@thebeccamurray: there is life beyond the cinch. i did not start truly developing my personal style until i released the idea that my clothes needed to be “flattering” (i.e. make me look smaller). realizing that i don’t have to emphasize my waist or balance my hips or draw attention to my smallest part or avoid certain patterns or generally fear looking remotely larger than i am opened a WORLD of possibilities. does it change some people’s perspective that women’s bodies generally or larger bodies specifically look sloppy in oversized clothes? no. but i don’t care about their narrow, restrictive & frankly outdated pov. i don’t get dressed for them, i get dressed for me — and for the 23 year old me who who created rules around how baggy my clothes were allowed to be based on the number i saw on the scale; who saw a gorgeous caftan on a thin older woman & said “i wish i was skinny enough to pull that off.” i can’t time travel, but i can honor my past, present & future self by dressing in a way that brings ME joy, society’s rules & expectations be dammed.
