![The Making Of Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” 🎤 The beat came from The 45 King. He had built it around the chorus of “It’s the Hard Knock Life” from the musical Annie. Jay-Z heard it on tour. Kid Capri was DJing and played a dubplate of it and Jay knew right away he had to have it. Then came the hard part: getting Annie’s writers to approve it. Jay wrote a letter to lyricist Martin Charnin and made up a story. He said he’d won an essay contest in seventh grade and the prize was a trip to see Annie on Broadway. He never won any contest and never saw the show. He wrote about it in his book Decoded. The sample was cleared before the song came out and Charles Strouse, who composed the original, gave the record his approval. A hard street story over a Broadway show tune sounds like a contradiction. Both stories are about kids making it through hard times and taking pride in surviving, so Jay wrote his verses to fit the hook. It came out in the fall of 1998 as the second single from Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life. It peaked at number 15 on the Hot 100 and number 2 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, reached number 2 in the UK, and was his biggest single up to that point . Jay-Z later came full circle and produced the 2014 Annie film.
