I'm a westerner and one of the main reasons Japan and all of Asia really have this is because we are TERRIBLE with respecting the culture. People with appropriate kimono, or harrass geiko or maiko.

Can confirm lol i was born there but my parents are Peruvian and they didn’t recognize my citizenship. I could’ve only claimed it when i turned 18 & only IF i spoke the language 🫠

I’ve only been turned away once, but it is common for people to assume I can’t speak Japanese. It also happens to my bf if I’m with him, which flusters him because he doesn’t speak English. 🤣

I don’t know I’ve seen this for many people, but I have never had that issue at all. Even now that I live in the country side of Japan, even very old restaurants where the owners are very old.

I never got turned away from a restaurant in Japan but maybe that's because I was only in big cities? The only place I was not allowed was the onsen, due to my tattoos.

One time when I was visiting, I was trying to buy some MTG cards for a friend, and was denied entrance because "Japanese Only." I was bummed, but I didn't take it too personally.

The Asians do this in America as well. Try to go to a restaurant in China town and was turned away - everyone eating there was Asian only

I’ve travelled internationally a bit. Never mistreated. But I also study the culture before arriving and embrace the cultural values they appreciate. Respect typically=acceptance.
