TikTok had its first day in court in the US yesterday with three federal judges questioning whether a ban on the company — inituated by Donald Trump and signed into law by US President Joe Biden five months ago — is legal. TikTok — with 170 million users in the US — argued a law that could ban the platform in a few short months is unconstitutional while the US Department of Justice said it is needed to eliminate a national security risk posed by the popular social media company, owned by Chinese company Bytedance. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, based between Los Angeles and Singapore — said after the ban: “We’re not going anywhere.” TikTok creators have also been very supporting online — proclaiming how it is supporting the creator economy healthily — but also showing up outside of the courthouse in Washington DC to protest a possible ban. We will see how that will unfold… … But TikTok is no doubt growing and its numbers bear that out, in particular for young people with 48% of TikTok users under 30. Young people on the platform say that keeping up with politics and political issues is a reason why they’re on it. 62% of US adults ages 18-24 use the app regularly as a “search engine” to find information, including about politics and the causes they believe in. Much of the election-oriented content is propelled by an ecosystem of hundreds of creators and influencers discussing politics, diplomacy, social issues — more often than not through partisan lenses. At the conventions this summer and at the NATO Summit in Washington DC in July, in recognition of their growing clout, organizers gave credentials to those creators to facilitate their work and amplify their voices. These content creators — many of which have millions of followers on TikTok, more than mainstream media, and definitely higher engagement rates — drive how users consume political and social issues news. #tiktokban #digitaldiplomacy
