@sachistorymuseum: On January 27, 1850, Samuel Gompers was born. Gompers is responsible for organizing the American Federation of Labor ((AFL) in 1886 and serving as its president (except for in 1895) until he passed away in 1924. As an advocate for craft and trade workers' rights, the AFL fought for better working conditions, higher wages, collective bargaining rights, and shorter work days. The AFL merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in 1955 and still exists today. The Sacramento Central Labor Council, as part of AFL-CIO has helped organize workers in the Sacramento area since 1889. For today, Jared letterpress printed two photo engravings from the Brett from Pennsylvania Collection.
