The Making Of Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” 🎤 The beat came from The 45 King. He had built it around the chorus of “It’s the Hard Knock Life” from the musical Annie. Jay-Z heard it on tour. Kid Capri was DJing and played a dubplate of it and Jay knew right away he had to have it. Then came the hard part: getting Annie’s writers to approve it. Hard Knock Life. It peaked at number 15 on the Hot 100 and number 2 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, reached number 2 in the UK, and was his biggest single up to that point . Jay-Z later came full circle and produced the 2014 Annie film.
