Their village had 15 homes and was located way off the main road in the mountains. "Standard Mandarin didn't exist" when the parents were growing up, as in it hadn't yet been established as China's official language or fully implemented in schools. As Zhuang people, they grew up speaking their own language, which is more closely related to Thai.
