Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine and provides a fun yet challenging climb to the summit. There are a few ways to climb Mt Katahdin, and all of them involve an elevation gain of around 4,000 ft. The average round trip time is 8-12 hours. My daughter and I did in 9. Here are some key points if you want to climb this with kids: 🔹 First and foremost: No kids under 6 are allowed. 🔹 We hiked to chimney pond from the roaring brook TH. It is 3.3 miles that gains 1,500 ft of elevation gradually over a rocky trail with stream crossings along the way. 🔹 Once at chimney pond, we opted for the Cathedral trail. This is a super fun scramble almost the entire 1.5 miles to the summit with 2,353 gain. The ranger told us this was the most challenging trail and I would not recommend for inexperienced climbers. 🔹 Saddle trail is the most gradual ascent from chimney. It’s 2.2 miles over a rocky trail with 2,353 ft of gain to the summit. If we had been able to pack Hudson, we would’ve climbed this trail and it’s the best choice for most kids. 🔹We opted to return via the knife edge trail. This is a 1.1 mile traverse over the ridge line that is exposed and involves scrambling. There have been fatalities on this ridge so it is not advised in wind or bad weather. We continued back to roaring brook TH via the Helon Taylor trail. Important information: 🔹 This a popular climb that requires parking reservations. They open 2 weeks ahead of time online for non residents, anytime after 4/1 for Maine residents - book early! If you’re camping in the Park prior to hiking, you don’t need one. Unclaimed reservations are released at 7:05am so you could wait and see if you get a last minute one. Many people do. 🔹 Pets, firewood, drones, or groups more than 12 people are not allowed 🔹 80% of Park search and rescues happen on the descent 🔹 Start early in the day and pack the 10 essentials. Be prepared for all weather and conditions. This hike should be taken seriously! . . . #mtkatahdin #katahdin #mainehikes #hikemaine #climbingwithkids #hikingwithkids
