Congo confirms new Ebola outbreak in Kasai Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have confirmed a new outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Kasai Province, marking the country’s 16th recorded epidemic since the virus was first identified nearly five decades ago. According to the Ministry of Health, the outbreak began in the Boulapé area of the Bulapé health zone. The first confirmed case was a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to a local health center on August 20 with symptoms including hemorrhaging, vomiting, and high fever. She died five days later. Since then, 28 suspected cases have been identified, including 15 deaths. Alarmingly, four of the deceased were healthcare workers. Laboratory analysis has confirmed that the outbreak involves the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus —the most lethal variant, with a fatality rate currently estimated at over 50 percent in this outbreak. In response, the DRC government has deployed a national Rapid Response Team to the affected region. The World Health Organization and partner agencies are supporting local health workers with case management, epidemiological surveillance, laboratory testing, and infection prevention protocols. Additional supplies, including protective equipment and medical materials, have also been sent to the region. To curb the spread, authorities have begun ring vaccination using the Ervebo Ebola vaccine. A stockpile of 2,000 doses has been allocated for frontline health workers and high-risk contacts of confirmed cases. The outbreak comes amid persistent challenges in the DRC's public health system, including fragile infrastructure, low trust in health authorities, and the remote nature of affected communities. Public health experts warn that without swift containment, the virus could spread to neighboring provinces. The government has urged calm and cooperation from residents while intensifying outreach to educate communities on symptoms, prevention, and early reporting. #Desitdown #news #Congo #confirms #newEbola #outbreak #Kasai
