@bdccarpenter: Bench press gym fail. A stranger sitting on your face is not ideal. At least, not as a surprise in the gym. Maybe consensually in the comfort of your own home. Alright so here is the drill. Asking for a spot in the gym is a gamble. If you don’t know the person doing it, it could go horribly wrong. At worst, this can put you in danger. Like my friend who was new to the gym and when he saw my other friend struggling on the bench, he ran over and assisted from ONE SIDE OF THE BAR. Pro tip: if you are bench pressing and someone helps ONE SIDE OF THE BAR, that bar will tilt and that definitely makes things way harder, not easier. Thankfully my other mate did not tear his chest, but it was super lolz-worthy afterwards. But, I also think it’s important for the lifter not to expect too much from a spotter. A stranger once called me over to help on his bench press. Of course I happily obliged. He failed rep one by A LOT, so I had to put a lot of energy into lifting that bar off his chest. When he got it to the top he said “ok three more!”. No, bro. You are not asking me to be here for your safety, you are asking me to help do the reps for you and I did not sign up for that shit. Basically, a good spotter can help make sure you don’t accidentally put yourself into an early grave, but asking a stranger to spot you when you cannot complete even one rep is a recipe for disaster.
