The wave of farmer protests in the past few days are the latest episode in a growing political backlash which has been brewing for months over the prices they receive for food. Many farmers blame cheap imports and the impact of environmental policies imposed by the bloc for their plight. Protesters in Belgium have dumped manure outside parliament buildings in the south of the country and blocked one of the biggest ports in Europe, while French farmers have been blocking major highways out of Paris with tractors.
