Be careful because they can screw up your dog even if they have the best intent.⁣ ⁣ Excitement is a slippery slope with dogs and one that humans do not fully understand at this point.⁣ ⁣ Bubba is a dog who developed anxiety because he was pet at the incorrect times.⁣ ⁣ When people would enter the house or meet him on the street, he would get highly aroused/excited and so would the human who would pet him at that moment, only causing Bubba to get more and more excited.⁣ ⁣ It created an association that humans should always be excitedly petting me, or else I can't handle life and become very anxious.⁣ ⁣ Excitement should be seen as arousal. It is not always good. If you want a calm dog, nurture calmness.⁣ ⁣ To be clear, there is nothing wrong with excitement. I allow my dogs to get very excited at times, but I always allow it in the proper environment, with limitations on time and intensity.⁣ ⁣ In other words, I prefer my dogs to be calm with guests, calm with people approaching and calm with being pet.⁣ ⁣ I prefer their excitement to be outdoors, playing games, doing agility, running with a bike, etc.⁣ ⁣ Are you understanding how powerful affection can be, good or bad?
