In continuing with International Dog Day, a killer Colima dog from Mexico, circa 100 BC to 250 AD. This piece measures 15” long by 11 1/2” tall. He has a gorgeous brown color, wonderful deposits, great muscle structure that is also incised and shell inlaid eyes. The ears have loops that most likley held perishable earrings in ancient times. Ex Meza family collection from Whittier, California. Acquired in the 1960s. These ceramic effigies represnt the Xolo or Xoloitzcuintli. Its the National Dog of Mexico and one of the oldest breeds at 3500 years old. They were loved pets and guardians in the afterlife. The Aztec/Mexica believed these dogs would guide their owners through the dangerous Underworld and into the Afterlife safely. They were sacred beings to them. This example has been acquired legally according to all US laws that pertain to cultural art, including the UNESCO treaty.
