The natural inclination (fitrah) of human beings is to believe that Allah is above His Throne (bi dhatihi), in a manner befitting His majesty, without delving into takyif (asking how) or tashbih (likening Him to His creation). This innate understanding aligns with the plain meaning of the Qur’anic verses and the teachings of the early generations of Muslims (salaf al-salih). However, the Ash’ari school and other groups that lean towards ta’wil (figurative interpretation) consider such a belief problematic and even label it as anthropomorphism or disbelief (kufr), as they argue that it implies a physical location for Allah, which they reject. In contrast, the athari position maintains that the fitrah is a God-given guide and that the natural understanding of Allah’s transcendence (uluw) is consistent with the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the consensus of the early scholars.
