@sachistorymuseum: On February 3, 1857, The Daily Bee published its first issue of its newspaper. The first editor of the newspaper was John Rollin Ridge until he retired from the position a week later and James McClatchy became editor. The Bee was originally located on Third Street between J and K Streets. The name “The Daily Bee” appeared in the masthead of the paper until 1890 when it was changed to “The Evening Bee.” The name “The Sacramento Bee” finally appeared at the top of the newspaper on March 6, 1908. When the Sacramento Union closed its doors in 1994, the Bee soon became the longest running newspaper in Sacramento and is still publishing today. In honor of the Bee’s birthday, Jared discussed the first edition of the newspaper and letterpress printed “Sacramento Bee” using 15 line wood type that was made in the late 1880s by the Hamilton Wood Type Company. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #onthisday #sacramentobee #newspaper #typography #sacramento #museumtok #history #letterpress #printing
