President Biden on Tuesday announced a series of steep tariffs on Chinese imports — including electric vehicles, solar panels, semiconductors, and steel and aluminum — to combat what the White House says are unfair trade practices by its top global competitor. “American workers can outwork and outcompete anyone, as long as the competition is fair. But for too long, it hasn’t been fair,” the president said from the White House Rose Garden. China heavily subsidizes its industries allowing it to flood the global market with artificially low-priced exports, which the U.S. hopes to counteract with the new taxes. “The prices are unfairly low because Chinese companies don’t need to worry about a profit because the Chinese government subsidized them and subsidized them heavily,” President Biden said while noting other “anticompetitive tactics,” like forcing American companies to transfer technology to do business in China. The increased tariffs will apply to about $18 billion worth of annual imports from China. The tariff rate for electric vehicles will jump from 25% to 100%; steel, aluminum and lithium-ion batteries from 0–7.5% to 25%; and semiconductors and solar cells from 25% to 50%. The Chinese government quicky pushed back on the tariffs, calling it “bullying” that will “seriously affect the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation.” It’s unclear whether the tariffs will contribute to a wider trade dispute. White House officials said they don’t think the tariffs will escalate tensions with Beijing, but they expect China to explore ways to respond. President Biden sees the tariffs, coupled with increased U.S. investments in manufacturing, as critical to maintaining U.S. dominance on the global market and contrasted his policies with those of former President Trump. “My predecessor promised increased American exports and boosted manufacturing. But he did neither. He failed,” the president said. “Since I’ve come into office, the GDP is up, our trade deficit with China is down to the lowest level in over a decade, and we’re standing up against Chinese government unfair economic practices now.” #biden #import #export #cspan
