If you can’t see your alternate reality where you made “better choices,” it’s not real. I feel like I’ve changed my outlook on life so many times, I used to be such a nihilist. I believed that everything is on a fixed path and that even the illusion of choice is fate- your “free will” is already predestined and the conclusions you come to about all the millions of choices you make throughout your life are already decided. Even if there are certain outcomes you want to change about your life for the better, it was already destined from the moment you were born and the series of circumstances that lead you to that point, including how your brain chemistry was created in the first place . You could go in circles and argue forever that you change your fate by making those choices, or that it was already predestined to make that choice and come to whatever conclusion you arrive at. Where I’m at now is similar but almost more absurdist - if everything is predestined, all the circumstances and choices you’re given are fate, doesn’t that mean no other path exists except the one you’re on? So nothing really matters :) Meaning there’s no point in holding onto retrospective regret, thinking you could’ve done more. The only path that matters is the one you’re on right now. So if you are on the right path right now, (granted it’s the only one that exists) you’re destined to make it count. It can’t be better but it also can’t be worse. And if it was your destiny to let those past mistakes make you a stronger person in the future then so be it, there’s no time like the present.
