I use rubber sealed knife assembly to keep dirt out. When fitting the bearing caps I remove the rubber seals with a hooked seal pick.

What about a needle? Sticking it in diagonally through the center, not edge, that way you can preserve the edge of the seal and dab the hole with glue

I use a seal pick in the same way you used the small flat end screwdriver, 100% no damage to seal lip whatsoever

If you want a re-Pack bearing just bye the right bearing in the first place. Re-pack bearings are cheaper than sealed bearings.
