I’ve been thinking about how one of the cruelest things about shame is that it has no sense of proportion. It takes one moment, one decision, one season of your life and stretch it so far until it covers everything else you know about yourself. Isn’t that interesting? And after carrying it long enough, you start treating that moment as if it’s evidence of who you really are, as though everything good in you is somehow less credible than the thing you regret most. It’s one of the worst tricks our mind plays on us. But I’ve been thinking about how strange that logic actually is. Because we rarely look at the best thing we’ve ever done and decide that one moment tells the complete truth about us. We never really say, “I was incredibly generous once, so now generosity can explain every part of me.” And yet.. shame will ask us to give our worst moments that kind of authority. I think that’s part of why shame can keeps us stuck even after we feel like we have genuinely changed. You can change the direction of your entire life, apologize, repair what you can, learn something that completely rearranges you, and still secretly believe you owe your past a lifetime of self-punishment. At some point, continuing to condemn yourself stops teaching you anything new because now you’re just repeatedly sentencing a person who has already learned the lesson. I’m learning that yes, your past can tell the truth about something you did. It can tell the truth about where you were, what you believed, what you didn’t understand yet, or what was broken in you at the time. But it was never qualified enough to give you or the world the final testimony about who you are. Especially when God is still writing the story. So if you’re struggling with shame today, I hope you stop asking your past to testify about a person it no longer knows. ❤️‍🩹 #healing #shame #faithjourney #christian #grace
