@heartofdating: As a dating coach, you would think that I would be all about the Spark and instant chemistry. The truth is I USED to be. I used to be obsessed with the idea of a new and exciting relationship. The constant rush of waiting for them to finally respond or the “excitement” of never knowing what to expect from them. In all honesty, the highs and lows of an inconsistent relationship felt EXCITING to me… but that was actually coming from a deep place of unhealth within me. It wasn’t until I took time to learn about myself, my attachment style, and what I truly NEEDED in a relationship (which yes, can be different than what you WANT in a relationship) that I started to see the importance and value of steadiness and consistency over constant ups and downs. Now I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be excited in your relationships or that butterflies are a red flag… but I am saying to be cautious in how much value you put into feelings and “excitement”… aka the initial SPARK and CHEMISTRY in a relationship. You don’t need someone who is “exciting” because you never know what you’re going to get from them… you need someone who is going to be a calm in the storm, a steady shoulder to lean on, and most importantly… someone who makes you feel SAFE.
