Clinical trials on PMDD are rare, so a study examining saffron’s effects is especially exciting. Participants were given either:

1. Saffron
2. Fluoxetine (antidepressant)
3. Placebo 

Saffron significantly reduced the severity of PMDD vs placebo. What’s more, saffron was as effective as fluoxetine for improving PMDD. For PMS, the benefits are also compelling. 2 randomised, placebo-controlled studies found taking saffron daily across 2 cycles significantly reduced PMS & depressive symptoms scores. Saffron extract supplements are pretty hard to get hold of, but DITTO’s Cycle Supplement gives the exact effective dose as used in these studies.  Saffron has long been prized for its distinct flavour & vibrant colour, but in recent years, the extracted form of the spice has gained attention for its potential to improve mental health symptoms. Saffron is shown in several studies to have an antidepressant effect in humans This is believed to come from its bioactive compounds, primarily safranal & crocin. These compounds have been shown to influence the brain’s neurotransmitter systems, particularly by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin & dopamine. These “feel-good” chemicals play a key role in regulating mood & saffron helps keep more of them available in the brain, potentially lifting mood & reducing feelings of depression & anxiety.
