I've been using mine for nearly 15 years. You can run the staples either way you want. It depends on the curvature of the plastic. I've done it both ways and never had a problem. Ever....

I use mine at work and it's great! if you want a stronger hold use a knife or a flat head and brush the melted plastic over the wire

Another trick is to melt the plastic over the top a little with one if the staples to smooth it out 😇
