You can only learn to regulate an emotion you allow yourself to feel. But “allow” needs some nuance. Sometimes your nervous system is protecting you from feeling something you don’t yet have the capacity to process. You might shut down, disconnect, go numb, or not even know what you’re feeling. The goal is never to force yourself to feel something before you’re ready. It’s to create enough safety to listen to what your body is ready to show you. And when an emotion does come up, you don’t need to immediately understand it. You don’t need to know exactly why you’re angry, exactly what boundary was crossed, or exactly what you’re going to do about it. Anger might simply tell you: something doesn’t feel okay here, or a boundary may have been crossed. That can be enough for right now. Because attunement isn’t about intellectually figuring out every emotion while you’re experiencing it. First, we let ourselves experience what is here. We notice the anger. We feel where it lives in the body. We allow the sensations and emotion to be present without immediately trying to suppress, fix, explain, or act on them. The deeper understanding can come later. Maybe once the intensity has shifted, you realize what bothered you. Maybe you recognize the boundary that was crossed. Maybe you understand what you need or what action you want to take. But you don’t need those answers in order to acknowledge what your body is communicating right now. The same goes for sadness: this mattered to me. Or fear: something feels threatening, uncertain, or I need more support. Sometimes that is all the information you have access to in the moment. And that is still attunement. This is why, in ARC: Attunement helps you notice, feel, and listen. Regulation helps you support yourself through what you’re experiencing. Capacity expands your ability to stay present with more over time. You don’t have to understand an emotion before you’re allowed to feel it. Sometimes the feeling comes first. The understanding comes later.🤍 #nervoussystemregulation #nervoussystemhealing #emotions #nervoussystemattunement #highfunctioninganxiety
