Creating NO-DIG Growing beds 🌱 I’m in the process of converting an old unkept allotment into an organic no-dig vegetable garden and it’s finally time to create the main growing beds! And of course they are all going to be created utilising the ‘no-dig’ or ‘minimal disturbance’ methodology. This old allotment space had been dug over year after year and the soil has sunk and degraded overtime. But by mulching instead of digging or tilling, we can mimic natural processes and start to rebuild that soil structure and allow the myriad of life within to thrive whilst creating a symbiotic relationship with the plants we then grow, increasing yields and boosting biodiversity. There’s also far less weeds and effort once they are made! 😊🙌🏻 I mainly create ground beds as they are cheaper to make and are less likely to harbour pests if properly maintained. I began by clearing the existing debris and vegetation and then roll led out some recycled packaging cardboard as the base mulching layer to help suppress the existing vegetation. Then it’s time for some organic compost from my friends over @Plantgrow it’s 100% natural, vegan and chemical free! You can use code: NETTLESANDPETALS at checkout for 10% off if you’d like to try some 🌱 I add around 4-6” to set them up which is just an investment in the first year, you’ll only need to add a very thin layer yearly afterwards. I add stakes and twine to mark out the bed, rake out the compost evenly and then add some woodchip to mulch the pathways in between, which retains water, feeds fungi and microbes and keeps the garden clean and tidy. I also tamp down to compact slightly to create a nice planting surface. And that’s the beds ready to go, it’s as easy as that! 😊👍🏻 Then just get planting! Why would you ever dig? I’ve also created a more detailed tutorial, so just click the link in my bio, or comment below and I’ll send you the link 😊 #nodig #notill #allotment #vegetablegarden #gardeningtips #gardenproject
