Lawmakers and other special guests in the nation’s capital gathered Tuesday to pay their respects to Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States. Carter died Dec. 29 at the age of 100. He was the longest-living American president. Carter’s remains flew from his home state of Georgia to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, before arriving at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. Carter served as a naval officer before launching his political career. His casket processed up Pennsylvania Avenue via horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol, following his same inaugural parade route from 1977. When his casket arrived at the Capitol, members of Congress assembled in the rotunda for a memorial ceremony. Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted Carter’s accomplishments during his time in office from 1977-1981, including his appointment of more Black judges to the federal bench “than all of his predecessors combined.” She also touted the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt. “Jimmy Carter was that all-too-rare example of a gifted man who also walks with humility, modesty and grace,” Harris said. Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised Carter’s work with Habitat for Humanity, while House Speaker Mike Johnson remembered Carter as someone “who modeled the values of service and citizenship as well as any other American.” Carter’s casket will lie in state at the Capitol until his state funeral at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. #JimmyCarter #president #news #PBSnews #funeral
