@cbcnews: With Valentine’s Day approaching, CBC Go Public reporter Erica Johnson decided to use a suspicious direct message on Instagram as a way of uncovering just how romance scammers operate. The DMer claimed to be a smitten 40-something American oil rig engineer. In truth, he was a romance scammer based in Nigeria looking for a big score. When confronted, he explained how he ended up falling into that line of work. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), romance scams cost 945 victims more than $50 million in 2023. That means each person lost an average of almost $53,000. And that only reflects the fraud that victims reported to authorities. #Scam #Scammer #RomanceScam
