We did this and within 15-20 minutes he had it. We did a lot of balance bike before hand which also probably helped.

get them on a balance bike from 1yo and then they can do this right off the bat when they are about 2 to 3yo

Naw. Do it the easy German way. Balance first w/pedals off. When mastered, then add pedals.
