Jan had been watching her for almost two hours and she barely moved in that time. Thousands of people surrounded her screaming JingJing's name, singing along to every word and holding phones above their heads. Every time JingJing crossed the stage, the crowd shifted with her. When she smiled at one section, they screamed. When she blew a kiss towards another, they screamed louder. Jan heard almost none of it as her eyes stayed fixed on JingJing. Under the bright stage lights, dressed in blue and silver, she looked untouchable. Her hair was damp around her face from the heat and she was breathing hard between songs, but somehow she still managed to smile as though she could keep going all night. Jan knew better. She knew JingJing would be exhausted afterwards. She knew she'd kick off her shoes the second she reached her dressing room. She knew she'd complain that her throat hurt despite refusing to drink the tea her vocal coach kept pushing on her. She knew exactly where JingJing would go when she left the stage. That was why Jan was here…watching…waiting. When the opening notes of the final song began, Jan finally moved. Nobody noticed her slipping away from the crowd. Why would they? Everyone was looking at JingJing. Jan headed towards the side of the arena, where a set of temporary barriers separated the public areas from backstage. Two security guards stood near the entrance. She slowed as one turned to speak to someone Jan slipped through. The corridors behind the arena were quieter. Concrete walls replaced flashing screens and huge banners of JingJing's face. Equipment cases were stacked against walls. Staff hurried past carrying headsets and clipboards. Jan kept her head down as she moved. Nobody stopped her as she passed several doors before turning down a narrower corridor. At the end was one with a printed name attached. JINGJING Jan stopped at the door, her hand hovering over the handle. She glanced behind her at the empty corridor, then she silently opened the door. The dressing room was bright and surprisingly ordinary. A large mirror surrounded by lights covered one wall. Makeup, brushes and bottles crowded the table beneath it. Several outfits hung from a rail. A half-finished bottle of water sat beside a plate of fruit that had barely been touched. On the table was JingJing's phone. She walked towards it but didn't touch it. Instead she looked around. There were photographs taped around the mirror, friends, family, tour pictures. Then the distant roar of the crowd changed. Jan knew the last song had ended. Jan's head snapped towards the door as voices filled the corridor which meant one thing…JingJing was coming. Jan looked around quickly. There wasn't much time. She crossed the room and disappeared behind a partition near the wardrobe. Seconds later, voices sounded closer outside. Jan stayed completely still as the door opened and JingJing entered alone. She shut the door behind her and leaned against it. For a moment, she simply stood there breathing.

She shut the door behind her and leaned against it. For a moment, she simply stood there breathing. "God." JingJing sighed as she kicked one boot off and then the other. Exactly as Jan had knew she would. JingJing walked towards the mirror, pulling the clips from her hair as she went. She dropped them onto the table and picked up her water. Behind her, Jan watched from a tiny gap JingJing took several long drinks before putting the bottle down. Then she started removing her stage jewellery, while rolling out her stiff shoulders. A knock came at the door. "You good?" "Yeah. Give me ten minutes." "Got it." Footsteps disappeared. JingJing sighed and reached for the zip at the back of her outfit. Jan moved knowing this was her moment. Jan quietly stepped out from behind the partition, keeping low, stalking towards her prey. One step. Then another. JingJing was watching herself in the mirror, concentrating on an earring that has become caught on her hair. Jing didn’t see the figure approaching from behind.
