As many of you are aware, I was raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormon). Amanda and I stepped away from our faith a few years ago after painfully deconstructing what we’d once been certain of. We still have family and friends who are part of the church, so in many ways, we still feel a connection with the organization. Because we were so devout in the religion until our mid-30s, it is a permanent part of our identity. Recently we found out the church is now enforcing further restrictions toward transgender members. The church will no longer baptize trans people into the church, and it no longer makes allowances for hormone therapy in those who decide not to socially transition. Transgender people may attend church, but they may only attend meetings for their assigned sex at birth. They may not hold teaching callings or work with children or teens. Trans teens may participate only in the classes for their sex assigned at birth. If they attend overnight events, they must depart the premises at night. Trans people may use the bathroom that aligns with their identity, but only if a loved one stands at the door and makes sure that no one else enters. These restrictions all reinforce the phobia of trans people and further put gender non-conforming Mormons on the margins. Hearing these recent changes and knowing how it will affect many transgender Mormons who are navigating transitions or have yet to come out has been heavy for me. I hear from many trans people in this specific situation, and my heart goes out to them. Amanda and I have found happiness and community outside of our religion, but nothing about this journey has been easy. Making this video is my way of raising my voice. Trans is divine. Trans is beautiful. #trans #lgbtq #lgbt #transgender #mormon #exmormon #transwoman #transisbeautiful #latterdaysaints
