Meet Aurora Natalia, the 16 month old baby girl who at 12 months had her foot amputated due to a medical condition called fibular hemimelia. Most are born with a few toes but Aurora was born with all 5. At 1 week old they had to tie off her pinky toe and for a year she stood on a shorter right leg. Due to her missing a fibia on the right leg, reconstructive surgery would have been to complex for her. If we were to lengthen her leg she would need a 22cm growth that would lead to multiple invasive surgeries and she would potentially have a risk of an amputation later on in life. We did not want to risk this and have her wait until she was 5 for these types of surgeries. We wanted her to be a kid and grow up with her sister. Being an amputee, she can achieve all things, she can do all sports. Right now the hardest thing is teaching her how to walk. Her milestones are not behind, she is very smart and can already form small sentences. The only reason I share so much about Aurora is because I wish I was able to see more stories like Aurora’s when I had just had her. I was clueless and scared of the thought of amputating my babies foot but I know that we made the right choice for her. No queríamos arriesgarnos a que esperara hasta los 5 años para este tipo de cirugías. Queríamos que ella fuera una niña y creciera con su hermana. Al ser amputada, puede lograrlo todo, puede practicar todos los deportes. Ahora lo más difícil es enseñarle a caminar. Sus hitos no se quedan atrás, es muy inteligente y ya puede formar frases pequeñas. La única razón por la que comparto tanto sobre Aurora es porque desearía poder ver más historias como la de Aurora cuando recién la tuve. No tenía ni idea y tenía miedo de pensar en amputarle el pie a mi bebé, pero sé que tomamos la decisión correcta para ella.
