One of the most common cues in fitness classes is “keep your shoulders down and back”. Fitness instructors are usually referring to the upper trapezius with this cue. For many people, this muscle is over active and extremely tight. However, the upper trapezius plays an important role in scapulohumeral rhythm. While it is important to ensure that the upper trapezius isn’t taking over - shoulders down and back shouldn’t be our default position. An easy tip that I like to use is - your hand should reach your shoulder before your upper trapezius starts to pull towards your ear. I like this tip because it is something that you can pay attention to during your group fitness workouts by simply watching yourself in the mirror. This rule does NOT apply to overhead movements.
