Suzanne Cherry, a 62-year-old mother of three from Aldridge, has passed away after being struck by a van that drove onto a golf course during a police pursuit in Staffordshire. Mrs Cherry was playing golf with her husband at Aston Wood Golf Club in Shenstone on the morning of 11 April 2025 when the tragic collision occurred. The incident unfolded after officers from West Midlands Police began following a grey Nissan van in Kingstanding, Birmingham, in response to reports of suspicious activity. During the 12-minute police chase, the van was driven dangerously at speeds of up to 70 mph in 30 mph zones, mounted pavements, rammed police vehicles and collided with other cars before leaving the road and entering the golf course. At about 10:25 am, the van crossed onto the fairways and struck Mrs Cherry as she looked for her golf ball. Collision investigators later found that the van was still travelling at around 41 mph only seconds before impact. She suffered catastrophic injuries and was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she passed away four days later from her injuries, the day before her 63rd birthday. The driver, 51-year-old John McDonald of Bloxwich, Walsall, was arrested days after the crash and later admitted causing death by dangerous driving at Worcester Crown Court. Judge James Burbidge KC described McDonald’s actions as “wicked in the extreme” and sentenced him to 13 years and six months in prison. He must serve at least two-thirds of that term before being eligible for release and was also disqualified from driving for 16 years and eight months. Also in the van were McDonald’s son, Johnny McDonald, 23, of Netherton, Dudley, and 35-year-old Brett Delaney of Darlaston, Walsall. Neither man was held responsible for the collision itself, but all three admitted conspiracy to commit fraud. The court heard they had been operating under the name Approved Roofs Ltd, targeting elderly homeowners with unnecessary and overpriced repairs. Johnny McDonald was sentenced to 32 months’ imprisonment and Delaney to 28 months, with time served taken into account. In the days after the crash, Mrs Cherry’s husband described watching “in helpless horror” as his wife was struck while enjoying what should have been a safe activity. Her family said she had an “infectious zest for life” and that her passing had left an “unfillable void” for loved ones. #truecrime #truecrimetok #horror #ukcrime #murder
