@bratbustersparenting: Self-esteem does not come from other people, it comes from within you. You increase your kids self-esteem by giving them something to be proud of. What can they be proud of? How nice they are, their good behavior, the friendship that they have with you, how they treat people … that's what builds high self-esteem. When you set yourself up as a leader, their self-esteem happens organically. Kids of leaders tend to have high self-esteem, they tend to like themselves. Also, if you're the source of them liking themselves and having high self-esteem, they wanna please you. It's like, win win win, win.
