Trimming a grogged, stoneware bowl is the subject of this week’s narrated YouTube video, which you may have seen me throw in my previous upload from last Sunday. The shape is refined, any undulations in the rim corrected and excess clay removed but, this isn’t the only form I’m finishing in this film, as it’s concluded with a trimming montage of sorts that shows numerous other stoneware bowls being finished. In an ideal world I would have made clay test tiles before committing to producing larger shapes, but I don’t have time and I have faith that these should work, as they all fire to roughly the same temperature range. A few are heavily grogged; some are smooth as butter and others have an almost green-tone to them. I’ll be bisque firing these and glazing them as soon as possible and I can’t wait to make another film that shows that process, clay and glaze tests are always the most exciting things to exit fired kilns, even more so than the pots themselves, as I know what they’ll look like once fired.
