There are two different ways of doing philosophy. The first is the kind that you do at #university or in formal education. And this is where you learn what philosophers said. You learn about Plato, and Ibn Sina, and Lao-tzu, and you pitch them together in an intellectual battle. But the second way to do #philosophy is to discuss ideas in a philosophical way. And what does that mean? Well, often it means the Socratic way. It's something that can benefit anyone, and it's something the charity #SAPERE focuses on bringing back. They bring back this kind of philosophizing into the conversations that take place in our schools, homes, communities and workplaces. In the fourth century BCE, #Socrates made a name for himself by debating with people about the town. He would start from a position known as ‘Socratic ignorance.’ #Socratic ignorance is an epistemic virtue which recognizes that we could be wrong about everything or anything at any time. The ‘Socratic dialogue’ is to assume as little as possible. It’s to start from first principles and ask big questions like ‘What is #justice ?’, ‘What is goodness?’, ‘What is #truth ?’ I can almost guarantee you will not find a resolution. There will be no certain answers here. But the point Socrates was trying to model was that philosophical #dialogue will release something within you. This philosophical activity will be punctuated by moments of self-revelation and philosophical insight. For the Socratic method and SAPERE, philosophy is not so much about what some old #philosopher said. It's about thinking philosophically with others and for yourself.
