A report released Tuesday on tent encampments across Canada calls for urgent action from all levels of government to end what it calls a "life-and-death crisis." Federal Housing Advocate Marie-Josée Houle's report calls for the implementation by Aug. 31 of a national encampments response plan that would ensure that those living in encampments have access to basic necessities, like clean water, food and health care. "It's not about politics. It is about saving lives," she said. Houle sent a blunt message to the cities enforcing encampment evictions: "These are human rights violations. This approach will only endanger lives." Halifax Mayor Mike Savage told reporters Tuesday that people must leave the camps because the province is offering better housing. The same day, the City of Edmonton said it was reviewing Houle's report and coudn't comment on specifics. But a spokesperson agreed via email that the encampments are “a symptom of the shortage of safe, adequate and affordable housing as well as ongoing capacity challenges and barriers in the mental health, addictions and emergency shelter system.” #Housing #Homelessness #Canada
