It’s to keep the end of the box from recessing back. Sheetrock on backside and front traps the block. No screws needed.

Why would a drywaller punch a screw there? They are going to put screws on studs not random spots around an outlet.

if it's in a 2x4 wall and it's a 2x4 block you don't need to screw it in. it will be pinched by the sheetrock on both sides and not move.
