"Denver Drill" training! WHAT IT IS:  This training scenario has a firefighter down in a closet-sized space below a window. The victim is wearing full turnout gear with his/her head positioned against the wall below the window. Two firefighters must enter the small area to rescue the victim. Firefighter One checks for solid flooring from outside the window with a Halligan tool. Next, Firefighter One moves through the window head first and crawls over the victim to the victim’s feet. Firefighter One then utilized the victim’s Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) shoulder straps to rotate and pull the victim into a seated position. Firefighter Two enters the window head first and sits under the window with his back to the wall. Firefighter Two bends his knees creating a ramp to assist with getting the victim out of the window. Firefighter One lifts the victim onto the knees of Firefighter Two and then lifts the victim’s legs as Firefighter Two pushes upward so that rescuers outside the window can grasp the victim and assist in sliding him up and out of the window. WHY THIS TRAINING IS IMPORTANT:  The Denver Drill is in honor of Mark Langvardt, an Engineer with the Denver Fire Department in Colorado who passed away in 1992 after being separated from his crew when a floor collapsed in a commercial structure fire. Langvardt was trapped in a small storage room measuring approximately six by eleven feet on the second floor of the building. Filing cabinets and office equipment along the walls reduced the room to an aisle only twenty-eight inches wide. Only one exterior window measuring 20 inches wide with a sill height of 42 inches at the end of the aisle was available to extract Langvardt. Crews worked for nearly one hour to rescue Langvardt but unfortunately were not able to get him out in time before he died from injuries due to smoke inhalation. The Denver Drill was designed in response to this tragedy and is taught and practiced by fire departments throughout the United States.  • • • • • #Firefighter #DenverDrill #Training #FireDepartment #FireTruck #FireService #FirstResponders #FYP
