During 19th and 20th centuries Sri Lanka faced waves of immigration from British India and its colonies. Many were also sent to work as indentured labourers. These people mainly came from British India and worked on central Hill plantations of tea, rubber, and coffee. Among these people, there was a group of Afghans, who were sent to work as horse keepers and labourers. These Pashtuns originally came from Afghanistan, North Western Frontiers, and Balochistan Agency and were in numerous tribes e.g Afridi, Khilji, Yousafzai, Kakar, Ahmadzai etc. The local people referred to them with many names, Afghan Karayo (Afghan man), Pattani, Pattaniyar, Kabul Manishen (man from Kabul), Bengali Orang (Man from Bengal), because Pashtun traders would frequently travel to Bengal, mainly Calcutta where there's also a famous novel by Rabindranath Tagore called "Kabuliwala" However, the British deliberately registered them with the name 'Bhai' to distinguish them from other minorities such as Parsis who already had the surname "Khan" According to a legend, Pashtun warriors who were cloth traders arrived in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 15th century, seeking shelter from a storm and settled there. The tall and robust Pashtun traders helped the local Mukkuvar tribe win war against Thimilars, another local tribe. After winning them numerous battles, the people offered Pashtuns, local women in marriage and they subsequently assimilated. These Ceylonese Pashtuns were ambitious to become rich. They started money lending business and by 1930s they had a well organized system in place and offered money lending at hefty rates. They were often seen on streets and pavements collecting debts from the debtors. These Pashtuns were renown for their clothing which included Perhan (upper tunic) and Partug (trousers). They wore elaborately embroidered waistcoats and a turban. They were proficient speakers of Sinhala, Tamil, and Malay, but among themselves they spoke Pashto. They had their own mosques and would play sports such as Pahlawani and Buzkashi. They had their own chiefs and would settle disputes through traditional Jirga system.
