@astro_alexandra: SPACE NEWS: Satellite ERS-2 is crashing towards earth. Most of it will burn up in the atmosphere but pieces may hit Earth’s surface. Reentry likely over Europe. #space #astronomy #science #spacenews #nasa #breakingnews
five thousand pounds?? is that all? I would have thought satellites were way more expensive than that

My work building is empty overnight, good place to land should they need to change trajectory 👀👀

Does anything "skip" off the atmosphere and back into space anymore?

very unlikely
alot of things are very unlikely but happen several times a day

How do they not know where or when? They can launch a rocket to precisely avoid debris in space

I think all new satellites should be required to have an a passive magnetic drag de-orbit devices...
e.g. 100foot rolls of metal tape

The website says the green line is the last chance to view it's orbit at those times. Meaning the debris field is possible everywhere but there. 🤯

What exactly is happening when a chunk of space metal burns up and “disintegrates” on re-entry? Does it turn into ash? Does metal do that at high enough temps?

For future large satellites, can’t they be designed so that they can be exploded remotely after they descend to the ground?

Didn’t they have enough fuel to fully deorbit it in 2011?
