Heartbroken watching families being ripped apart, hard working immigrants being snatched from their workplaces to never see their children again, kids left crying outside their schools - all while working just to make a better life for their families. These are not criminals, they are our neighbors, our friends, relatives of friends and the fabric of what makes LA what it is - the backbone of this vibrant, beautiful city. I flew out of LA on the weekend for a planned trip back to Australia & surprised my sister for her birthday. While I’m currently not in LA, my heart is very much there and broken over the pain and hardship so many families are enduring right now. I was offline during the time with my family & learned of the news of what was happening in LA on Australian television. As my family watched alongside me, they asked me, Why is this happening? And I realized how little many people not from the U.S. - myself included - might know about undocumented immigrants living and working in the U.S. Something I’ve learned a lot more about in the past 48 hours. - Undocumented immigrants make up a significant part of the US workforce. Approximately 3.3% of the U.S. population is undocumented, and in 2023 approx. 4.9% of the US workforce was undocumented. - Undocumented workers pay taxes. Yes, that’s right. In 2023 undocumented immigrants paid $89.9B in taxes. - Undocumented immigrants do not receive government benefits and while considered “illegal” they are still able to do honest work. - Being undocumented in the U.S. is not a criminal offence, but a civil one. And while they may not have the right documentation, that doesn’t make them criminals. For many, it’s not as simple as “just apply” or “wait your turn.” The process is long, complex, and often inaccessible. It’s often prohibitively expensive, takes years (sometimes decades), and is nearly impossible without family or employment ties. For those fleeing violence, persecution, or poverty, waiting to apply “the right way” is sometimes not even an option. They take on roles in industries like agriculture, food service, cleaning and construction - often jobs that many American citizens do not want to pursue (according to US voter surveys). They help drive the economy. These are people who contribute so much, who came seeking stability and a better life for themselves and the people they love - something that should resonate with every single person on a deeply human level. The images and stories I’ve seen - of people being detained at work, parents running from schools during their kids’ graduations, families separated without warning or due process, children watching their mums or dads disappear - are absolutely heartbreaking. These are hard-working people trying to live with dignity. There has to be a better way. The videos & photos I’ve shared are not mine, but images that spoke to me and helped give me a better understanding. I hope they help you too, particularly if your feed looks a little different or you are not from the U.S. If you are looking for a way to support, @CHIRLA is doing important work to protect immigrant families in LA where you can donate. For me, this isn’t about politics, it's about people and humanity 💔❤️ #LAice #undocumentedimmigrants #laprotests #losangeles
