Notes: (1) The history of computing is a mess and I've slightly emblished Zuse's relationship to Boole for dramatic effect. Zuse had effectively recreated Boole's work without knowledge of it and, as a consequence, had some trouble with his deductions. His friend informed him of Boolean algebra as a means to refine his deductions, not as an outright way to make the programming possible altogether. I have unfortunately left out Peirce's application of logic to circuitry, some 50 years before Zuse created his computer and nearly 60 years before Claude Shannon's work. (2) Leibniz's algebra of concepts is deductively identical to Boole's work. Both are based on Aristotle's syllogistic. (3) Zuse's computer was mechanical, not electrical. (4) Zuse's Z1 was unreliable as a computer and was updated several times independently of Shannon's work on circuits. (5) Aristotle thus enters in 3 places: inspiration for Lull, condition for Leibniz's work, and condition for Boole's work. (6) I mistaken say that propositional calculus was 200 years old when Zuse was working - it was more accurately about 70 years old.
